A Sea of Memories
Join us in spreading the word on the uniqueness of the Baltic Sea! Share your most unforgettable Baltic Sea memory with us. From the memories, we will build an exhibition that focuses on the Finns’ relationship with the sea.
You can choose the way you share your memory: as a photo, text, audio recording, or video. The memory can be long or short, funny or moving – even scary! What matters most is that memory is in some way important to you.
You can tell us about your unforgettable catch, your wild sailing trip, the most disgusting experience with blue-green algae, or your favourite spot to visit by the sea. The memory can also involve the animals or the seasons of the Baltic Sea. Your memories matter, and we hope to receive stories on a great variety of topics!

Win a guided sailing trip on the s/y Belmont
Amongst all participants who have shared their memories and contact information by 30 June, we will raffle a sailing trip for five, with their plus ones, on the legendary s/y Belmont (value of the prize is approximately €250/person). You or your companions do not need to know how to sail, as the trip comes with a professional crew. The sailing trip will take place in Helsinki in August 2020.
In addition to the sailing trip, we will raffle out 10 books published by the John Nurminen Foundation (value of one prize is from €15 to €40). The prizes are drawn on 3 July 2020, and the winners will be notified in person.
Sea of Memories Project
Collecting memories is part of the John Nurminen Foundation’s Sea of Memories project. The project’s objective is to open up new vistas to the images and beliefs people hold of the sea, and to encourage Finns to think about their relationship with the Baltic Sea.
The full range of memories and the Finns’ relationship with the Baltic Sea will be curated into a multimedia exhibition to be launched on the Baltic Sea Day, 27 August 2020.
We will be happy to receive your memories also after the exhibition, as they can be used in later exhibitions, books, or podcasts.
All memories of those who gave permission will also be handed over to the archives of the Finnish Literary Society. By participating, you will leave a permanent mark in the memory of our nation, and help accrue our national cultural heritage!
