Although Estonia did not remain an independent state, its music never lost its distinctive character. The Estonian Slavicness does not sound melancholic, but is filled with pent-up optimism instead. Where Lepo Sumera’s Musica Profana sounds like Prokofiev and Shostakovich without the sarcastic aftertaste, Ester Mägi’s Vesper is tinted by recollections of the Baroque era. The devotional minimalism of one of the most famous composers of our time, Arvo Pärt, is so original that it could even be patented.
